The European Union (EU) is by far the world’s biggest importer of fish, seafood and aquaculture products. The importation rules of these products apply to all EU countries. On behalf of all EU member states, the European Commission is the sole negotiating partner for all non-EU countries and implements the EU food law which details the principle of quality management and process- oriented controls for the entire food chain – from the fishing vessel or aquaculture farm to the consumer’s table.
This formal certification is a pre-requisite for the country/supplier to be eligible and authorized to export to the EU, ensuring credible inspection and controls throughout the production chain, which cover all aspects of hygiene, public health and, in the case of aquaculture products, also animal health.
